As a God of Death, Kid possesses a rare ability known as Soul Perception. You can read a bit more about it over here.

Essentially, Kid is able to sense the souls of living beings around him, and, with concentrated effort, he can pick up on certain details about the individual. As he is not as skilled as Stein or Maka, these would be very general characteristics, such as dominant personality traits or if the person is good or evil. The size of a soul is dependent on the individual's power level; so, while the average soul is quite small, the soul of Kid's father, encompasses an entire city.

Once Kid is familiar with a particularly soul wavelength, he would be able to sense the presence of that person without actually seeing them. It doesn't cover long distances by any stretch, but if they are in the general vicinity, he could likely pick up on them.

In the series, the souls will visually reflect on the appearance of the person, like this or this. If you want to describe your character's soul, please feel free!

In order to avoid infomodding anyone, Kid will never use this ability without permission. I would ask that players take a moment to fill this out, so I know what everyone is cool with!
